It was only two o’clock and I had an hour to kill before Kate came home so I went for a walk along the side of the Waiho River. I was deep in thought, not taking much notice of my surroundings but my eye was caught by a sudden movement by the river.

It was a small child and she was dancing among the uneven rocks.

One false step and she could fall into the unforgiving glacier river. And if that happened she would die.

I didn’t know what to do. If I approached her and startled her she could fall. And if I did nothing she could fall anyway. Where were her bloody parents? She spun round laughing and I recognized her. She was Luke’s daughter. Emma.

‘Hi,’ I said and to my relief she stopped her dance and stood still looking at me.

‘My name’s Philippa,’ I walked up to her trying not to show any trace of tension. ‘You’re Emma aren’t you? That looks an interesting game that you’re playing.’

‘I was being very careful. I know not to fall in the river but that’s the only place the fairies will dance.’ Her face glowed. She was a gorgeous child.

‘Will you come back with me now?’ I asked. ‘I think your daddy might be looking for you.’

She took my hand and we made our way back towards the village.

We hadn’t gone far before Luke hurtled into view.

‘Oh thank God,’ he gasped, scooping Emma into his arms. ‘I’ve been so worried, chicken. Why aren’t you with Mummy?’

‘She wanted to lie down,’ Emma told him. ‘And I got bored and came here to see the river fairies. Just like you showed me that time, Daddy.’

Luke’s face changed from red to white in an instant.

‘The careless bitch,’ he said and I was shocked by the fury in his expression.

Just then Jenny came running towards us, her face stressed.

‘You fucking careless bitch,’ he said and Emma winced in his arms. ‘Not you, chicken,’ he said. ‘You’ – he gestured at Jenny with his free hand. While you were sleeping my daughter could have drowned. And if she had I’d have killed you with my own hands. You understand what I’m saying.’

Jenny stared at him in shock.

And I looked at the changed face of the amiable muddler I thought I knew. I believed him. He could have killed her. In this moment he looked capable of obsessive love and violent anger. Just the kind of qualities that would have been needed by Vivien Revell’s killer.
